"I selected Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Portrait of an Old Man in Red Chalk’ since it was the most sketch-like image. I was drawn to the gradual transition from sketch (in the hair) to realism (of the face). I wanted to imitate the original image and focus on the use of highlights through erasing, not from the natural white of the paper."
